John Landis Gathering Funds for Biopic About Mad Magazine Publisher Bill Gaines
Posted by Maddest - 17/05/10

Bill Gaines is one of the most important figures in comic book history. In the '50s he was the man behind E.C. Comics, which with titles like Tales From the Crypt and Weird Science became a scapegoat for juvenile delinquency. A Senate Subcommittee investigation into the effects of horror comics led to a skewed public perception of Gaines that nearly put E.C. out of business. Gaines kept one title, which he developed over many years: Mad Magazine.

Alfred E.Neuman on a very old picture!
Posted by Maddest - 13/05/10

The Alfred image in this picture belongs to the Antikamnia 1908 Calendar.

image

Vintage dentist photo found in Wisconsin a while back. There are a lot of things to like about this one- the spittoon with stand, the newspaper (can't make out any of the words), and what I think is the 1908 Antikamnia Tablet Calendar hanging on the wall in the background (looks like Alfred E. Neuman). Looking at the gentleman who is the dentist, he sort of looks like Alfred E. Neuman which may explain why it is displayed in his office. At first, I thought this might be a barbershop photo. Looking carefully, you can see medicine bottles on the shelf in the background, a thermometer on the wall, and some type of medical apparatus just to the right of the man in the chair. Found in Wisconsin, date and photographer unknown.

Thanks to AtypicalArt for this image!

Cartoon Network is planning an animated series based on Mad Magazine
Posted by Maddest - 23/04/10

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and using the iconic MAD magazine, published by DC Comics, as inspiration, MAD is an animated sketch-comedy series utilizing a chaotic mix of animation styles and twisted humor to pull back the curtain and expose the truth behind movies, TV shows, games, pop culture and, of course, curtains! Classic MAD magazine characters and features such as Alfred E. Neuman and Spy vs. Spy pop up, and no subject matter or individual will be safe from MAD's barrage of parodies and sketches. In the end, viewers won't get even, they'll just get MAD! Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Mark Marek (KaBlam! The Andy Milonakis Show) are the producers.

"To tell the truth" with MAD founder William M. Gaines
Posted by Maddest - 16/04/10

Here's the chance to see the founder of the MAD Magazine William M. Gaines in one of the most famous TV shows.

The show challenged a panel of four celebrities to correctly identify a described contestant who typically had an unusual occupation or experience. This central character was joined by two imposters who pretended to be that central character. The celebrity panelists questioned the team of challengers, with the imposters allowed to lie, but the central character sworn "to tell the truth".

Interesting: The former German MAD Magazine editor Herbert Feuerstein was a long-time member of the quiz team in "Was bin ich?", the German version of "To tell the truth".

Dave MacDowell -- Artistic Love Child of Dali and MAD Magazine
Posted by Maddest - 7/04/10

Dave MacDowell's contemporary works distort our lovable childhood stories and favorite films into nightmarish cultural parodies ... and we love it.

"There's a relatable power to cool subject matter, and I always try to sprinkle in subliminal subtle statements about media and corporate establishment," MacDowell told us over email. "I never get hate mail, because those looking for a fight aren't looking deep enough to get pissed."

MAD meets the Simpsons
Posted by Maddest - 21/03/10

When flicking through MAD magazines, one thing becomes evident: MAD has been kickin' The Simpsons' asses real hard in the past years. Naturally, the freaky, yellow family struck back and some episodes feature funny parodies of MAD in return. (I bet) you haven't heard of them.
