BEST OF EC COMICS ARTIST'S EDITION Coming in June From IDW!

From the IDW Press Release: San Diego, CA (February 15, 2013) - IDW Publishing is proud to announce an Artist's Edition like no other-The Best of EC COMICS Artist's Edition, Volume One. This massive book will measure 15" x 22", the same size as both the Wally Wood and MAD Artist's Editions, and will contain stellar works by Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman, Bernie Krigstein, Johnny Craig, and others. Additionally, there will be an art gallery of classic covers-including the peerless Weird Science-Fantasy #29 by Frank Frazetta.

"It's no secret that I am a serious EC lover," says Artist's Editions editor Scott Dunbier. "I can honestly say that this volume will feature some of the most beloved and remembered EC stories of all time!"

EC Comics was arguably the greatest publishing entity in the history of comic books. For a five-year stretch in the early 1950s they set the bar higher than ever before, and with a level of consistency unmatched. In the early 1980s the original art for all EC stories was auctioned off and most of these have been buried in collections since that time, rarely being seen by anyone except the original art's owners.

"Tracking down these treasures is a major undertaking since the stories are widely scattered among multiple collectors, but fortunately we have been able to unearth some of the truly best stories to come out of EC," says Dunbier. "The book will present readers with a veritable cornucopia of outstanding examples of true classics."

What is an Artist's Edition? Artist's Editions are printed the same size as the original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art-for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Previous Artist's Editions include DAVE STEVENS' THE ROCKETEER: ARTIST'S EDITION and WALTER SIMONSON'S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST'S EDITION, JOHN ROMITA'S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: ARTIST'S EDITION, WALLY WOOD'S EC STORIES: THE ARTIST'S EDITION, SERGIO ARAGONES' GROO THE WANDERER: ARTIST'S EDITION, AND DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI'S DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN ARTIST'S EDITION.

The ROCKETEER ARTIST'S EDITION won two Eisner Awards in 2011, for Best Archival Project and Best Design and THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST'S EDITION won the 2012 Eisner Award for Best Archival Project.

THE BEST OF EC COMICS ARTIST'S EDITION, VOLUME 1 (HC, B&W, 160 pgs., Please Inquire For Pricing.). In stores 6/19/13.

In April, to celebrate MAD magazine's 60th anniversary, DC comics will be releasing MAD-themed variant covers for 13 of their comic books.( For those who don’t know, a “Variant cover” is a cover different from the main cover of a comic or magazine, and sometimes is offered as a retailer incentive, store-exclusive, or in a limited print run.) The odds of getting a variant cover edition vary by title; For some books the odds of getting one are 1 in 100, though for the majority of the books featured, the odds are 1 in every 25 books. Just a few of the comic books being included in this promotion include Justice League Of America #3 , Wonder Woman #19, and Teen Titans #19.

You can help! Support Alan Bernstein's MAD film project 'When we went MAD'!

When We Went MAD!, a documentary that explores the history and influence of MAD Magazine is currently being filmed by Alan Bernstein and Potrzebie Pictures LLC, a Detroit area production company. With 20 key interviews already on film, the team is launching a Kickstarter campaign on January 10, 2013 to raise the funds necessary to complete this historic American project.

When We Went MAD! delves into America’s longest running humor publication, MAD Magazine. Interviews with MAD Magazine’s key players, including current and former artists, writers, and editors, When We Went MAD! pays tribute to the institution that has delivered a satiric view of American culture for over sixty years. This retrospective will include fascinating interviews with prominent figures who proudly cite MAD magazine as an influence. Who knew?

The story of MAD Magazine is as irreverent as those who created it – from the landmark court case that pitted Irving Berlin against MAD (the case that assured the legality of satire in general) to MAD’s maverick publisher, William M. Gaines, who once took his entire staff to Haiti to convince the sole Haitian subscriber to renew. MAD was mad, and we loved it.

Co-producer/director Alan Bernstein, remembers his first foray into Mad-ness.“I was six and found my first issue at a drugstore newsstand. I had no idea what I was looking at: Spy Vs. Spy, Don Martin, the Fold-In… I didn’t always get the jokes, but I knew I was looking at the ticket into something special and I wanted in.” Bernstein went from casual reader to collector. And from collector to producer.

An experienced filmmaker, Bernstein co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the feature film, One Half Gone. With co-producer Doug Gilford, twenty current and former artists, writers, and editors of MAD have been filmed including:

Al Jaffee – the inventor of the Fold-In and the feature “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions”
Dick Debartolo – the TV show Match Game writer whose work is in every issue of MAD since 1966
Sergio Aragones – his miniature cartoons filled the margins of MAD for fifty years.

To continue production on the project, When We Went MAD! is raising capital with a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter on January 10, 2013, to raise funds to cover the cost of travel, equipment rental, and post production. Anyone can contribute to the success of the film with levels . Everyone who pledges will be acknowledged with a certificate of recognition and insider updates regarding the film’s release. Larger contributions can include perks such as DVDs of the movie, T-shirts, posters, and the highest level includes an Executive Producer credit on the project.

Imagine being part of a project that preserves the voices of the great MAD Magazine. Talk it up at parties. Ask your friends where they were when they first read MAD. FOR six decades, a magazine has been putting the MAD in Madison Avenue by lampooning — and frequently harpooning — the huckstering of the advertising industry.

The magazine is, of course, Mad, which is celebrating its history of “humor in a jugular vein,” as its slogan once promised, with an anthology to be published on Tuesday titled “Totally Mad: 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity.” Among the 256 pages of the $34.95 book are generous samples of the wicked ad spoofs, parodies and sendups — takeoffs, as the editors call them — that have been an intrinsic part of Mad since the debut issue in August 1952.

IDW MAD 'Artists Edition' Announced!

The MAD: ARTIST’S EDITION will be approximately 160 pages and measure 15” x 22”. The expected release date is in December. It will include a dozen of the earliest covers and a selection of some of the finest and most memorable stories, including classics such as “Batboy and Rubin” by Wally Wood and “Howdy Dooit” by Elder. In the Artist’s Edition style, these covers and stories will be reproduced as very few people have ever seen them before.

“Mad influenced generations of filmmakers, artists and countless others,” said Editor Scott Dunbier, “its impact on American culture can’t be understated.” Continued MAD Editor John Ficarra, “This is a really fabulous book and I just want to be clear: I say something nice about it in the press release and I definitely get a free copy. Otherwise forget it.”

What is an Artist’s Edition? Artist’s Editions are printed the same size as the original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Previous Artist’s Editions include DAVE STEVENS’ THE ROCKETEER: ARTIST’S EDITION and WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION, JOHN ROMITA’S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: ARTIST’S EDITION, WALLY WOOD’S EC STORIES: THE ARTIST’S EDITION, SERGIO ARAGONES’ GROO THE WANDERER: ARTIST’S EDITION, and DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI’S DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN ARTIST’S EDITION.

The ROCKETEER ARTIST’S EDITION won two Eisner Awards last year, for Best Archival Project and Best Design

What, Me Worry? 60 Years of MAD - Exhibition

	April 21 – September 16, 2012

San Francisco, CA: In 1952, editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines launched MAD, one of the most influential and imitated humor publications in the world. Originally created to parody popular TV shows, movies and, inevitably, comic books, MAD soon expanded into a wide-ranging satire of modern American culture. Features like the MAD Fold-In, “Spy vs. Spy,” the wacky sound effects of “MAD’s Maddest Artist” Don Martin, the “marginal” cartoons of Sergio Aragones, and the motto “What, me worry?” have become indelible parts of popular culture, and the magazine’s mascot, Alfred E. Neuman, is one of the world’s most recognizable faces.

The Cartoon Art Museum’s latest exhibition, What, Me Worry? 60 Years of MAD celebrates the rich history of MAD from the original comic book through the black-and-white magazine to its latest incarnation as a full-color bi-monthly publication supplemented by online content. This is the museum’s first exhibition to include both the MAD comic book and magazine.

The Mad, mad world of Al Jaffee

	By Todd Leopold, CNN

A school monitor had pulled young Abe out of math class and told him to report to the art room. Sitting with about 50 students, Jaffee drew the first thing that came to mind, a scene of a village square in Lithuania, where he had spent several years of his childhood.

Jaffee, by then in his early teens, had already established a talent for art. His teachers admired it; fellow students encouraged it. After a bumpy several years in which he bounced like a pinball between his parents -- moving from Savannah, Georgia, to Lithuania, to one borough and then another of New York City, back to Lithuania and back again to New York -- art was something to hold on to, a way to establish an identity. He had no idea it would lead anywhere.

"Some folks' lives roll easy," Paul Simon once sang, "some folks' lives never roll at all." Jaffee -- you can call him Al now -- has had a life that's rolled downhill and uphill and occasionally clicked into place. It's like one of the Rube Goldberg machines he enjoys so much, those fantastical contraptions for simple tasks -- wiping your mouth, say, or closing a screen door -- that require falling bowling balls, agitated parrots, dropping hammers, kicking boots and snapping strings, turning minor chores into a symphony of wacky machinery.

Today Jaffee, who will be 91 in March, is known for his own contraptions, many designed during his long relationship with Mad magazine. There's the MAD Fold-In, the magazine's inside back page, which cleverly turns one Jaffee work into another by folding one portion over another. There's "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions," in which a humdrum question leads to several unexpected sarcasms.

Read the whole story on http://edition.cnn.com/2011/12/04/us/al-jaffee-mad-magazine/index.html

The cover of the new book 'Horrifyingly MAD' is reminiscent of an old back cover of the German MAD #199! The artist of this piece of art was Rolf Trautmann, who worked many years for the German MAD first series. Take a look at the covers below, the similarity is more than eye-catching!!

The EC comic books have long since become legendary for their extraordinarily high level of both writing and artwork. Originally regarded as mere ephemera, mint copies of the original 1950s issues can now command thousands of dollars. GC Press, LLC is devoted to keeping these classic comic books, as well as other fine EC-related products, in print for this—and future—generations to enjoy.

First up from the imprint is a continuation of the EC Archives series (which was originally published by Gemstone.) The first books to appear will be The Haunt of Fear Vol. 1 (containing the first six issues of that title, with a Foreword by Robert Englund and historical notes by Grant Geissman), and The Vault of Horror Vol. 2 (containing issues 7-12, with a Foreword by John Landis and historical notes by Bhob Stewart). The stories have been digitally re-colored based on the original 1950s Marie Severin colorings, but the new digital coloring allows subtleties of tone and shading that was not possible on the cheaply-printed original comics. All of the cover reproductions are taken from the original 1950s comics, using the finest copies available—including Gaines File Copies. The full-color, hardcover books (in colorful, illustrated dust jackets) will be solicited in the September issue of Diamond’s Previews, and will ship to stores in November. Retail price on each volume is $49.95.

Russ Cochran bought EC comic books right off the newsstands in the 1950s, and was an original member of the EC Fan-Addict Club. Over the past forty years, Cochran has published an important array of high-quality EC reprint publications, beginning in 1971 with the EC Portfolios. Spanning a period of many years, he published a black and white series of EC reprints (with the covers in color) entitled The Complete EC Library, which is widely credited with exposing the EC comics to younger generations, including a number of Hollywood filmmakers. Cochran is also a lifetime guitar picker, and has published books about his guitar idols, including Les Paul and Chet Atkins.

Grant Geissman began reading MAD magazine (which was also published by EC) in 1961 at the age of eight, and began collecting EC material around 1965 when he discovered the short series of EC reprints published by Ballantine Books in paperback book form. He is the author of Collectibly MAD/The MAD and EC Collectibles Guide (1995), Tales of Terror! The EC Companion (with Fred von Bernewitz, 2000), and Foul Play! The Art and Artists of the Notorious 1950s EC Comics! (2005). Geissman is also a jazz guitarist with fourteen solo albums to his credit, and he currently co-writes the music to the CBS-TV sitcoms Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly.

Mad magazine spoofs Economist "light bulb" poster, in reverse.

Mad magazine and ad agency Serviceplan in Germany have revived the Economist "light bulb" people sensor poster from way back in a spoof sure to make all adgrunts giggle a little. See, in the Economist poster, the light bulb came on when a person passed underneath it. In the MAD version, it shuts off. Har har har! A bit self-referental for my taste, but advertising people are probably the only consumer group who still buy Mad magazine and old Far Side cartoons so I'll let it slide. ;)

All kidding aside, it was a dream come to true when I got the phone call that I had won Mad Magazine's Summer Intern contest. As a kid, Mad Magazine had practically taught me how to read which is why I still think Shakespeare's little plays could be improved with words like BLECCH and ZOINKS!

A little story by Conrad Maclean

Once upon a time when the world was still young and humanity was so small and innocent that its entire population was confined to one small village beyond the mountains and across the lake, every body knew every body and nobody needed any sort of religious story book to tell them to love their neighbours, it was a chromosome there cultural DNA.

Then children started to go missing, disappearing from their beds after sunset, a few at a time each night. The village people thought the children were just fooling around and hiding in the bush around the village. It frequently happened, they’d come back in a few hours, what was there possibly to worry about? More went missing. Nothing like this had happened before. Days rolled by.

The people grew in to a state of panic. when they had searched the surrounding bush land, and it was quite apparent that the children were not coming back nor could they be traced, the people returned to the village and looked for somebody to blame, which did nothing to help the situation but it made them feel better about themselves.

The majority of the town found a suitable scapegoat in the eunuch population. “Who else” they thought “would be more likely to steal children than those who could not have them?”

Not many eunuchs lived in the town so they were easily rounded up in to the village square, then the people sharpened bamboo stalks and chased the eunuchs out beyond the mountains in to the never-never.

Box head was a villager at the time. He was called box head because he had a box on his head- without eye holes, he was just that rebel. Box head knew that the eunuchs were innocent, because the children started disappearing on the east side of the village, and most of the eunuch community lived on the west side. Besides where would the eunuchs hide the bodies if they were killing the children? What were the eunuchs doing with them if they weren’t killing them? Why would the eunuchs want to steal children at all? People would have seen the eunuchs doing what ever it was they were doing to the kids-but they hadn’t so obviously the eunuchs weren’t to blame. Box head didn’t say any thing though because he was scarred he’d get chased in to the wilderness along with anybody else who disagreed with the eunuch’s expulsion. The shame would haunt him forever.

Box head’s theory proved correct as the next morning most of the children that had not been stolen had disappeared. Nobody in the village wanted to admit that they had been wrong about the Eunuchs, so they just avoided talking about it. Who’d want to admit they’d chased there friends out of their homes for some thing they didn’t do? Box head came to realise that day that the only way they could save the remaining children and the future of humanity was to find who was really guilty of the kidnappings. He also felt the only way to self atonement for letting his friends be chased from their homes was to lead what ever effort he could to save the remaining children and to Convince The eunuchs to come back home.

Box head had no idea how do any of this so he visited the Wise old mountain emu spirit for advice. The canny old emu admitted the forest spirits were guilty, and that the spirits were stealing the children to make child powder, a variation of baby powder that was tipped to take the market by storm. The emu could see they had done it in a mystic vision. The crafty old spirit, (who in many ways resembled an eagle, but was more closely related to an emu) advised Box head to pump a special gas in to the forest. The emu knew that this certain gas only rises to the level the spirits floated at, which was also the level of altitude that all of the emu’s competitors in the food chain lived. The emu spirit also had shares in the company that produced the gas. So box head took the emu up on his offer and put together a fund with the other villagers to buy some of the gas. There was even a discount if you bought the gas in bulk so it all worked out.

Then box head and the villagers pumped the gas in the forest and killed all the spirits, the emu was please now because he didn’t have to compete and fight for his food.

So every body was happy because the children were safe, and nothing like this ever happened again.

At the end there was a big party to celebrate which none of the children were allowed at, because it was adults only.

In the never never the eunuchs were turned in to swans were they have been seen as more beautiful than they were in human form ever since. So really the eagle came off best by exploiting the villagers, the whole incident was forgotten because nobody wanted to acknowledge it, and those who were particularly close to the eunuch community yet let its persecution continue totally unopposed spent their lives going slowly mad with guilt because they found nobody with the courage to talk about it.

Legendary Mad Magazine writer, Frank Jacobs, set aside time in his busy schedule to let a couple boneheads reminisce with him about old Mad covers and a few inside details. High point was the revisiting of the back of issue #80 in which Frank turns on his charming mug 47 years after the original photo appeared. He also talks about the famous middle finger cover #166, rap music, his favorite movie/musical parody, the current state of Mad artwork, along with mentions of Mort Drucker, Al Feldstein, Nick Meglin, Jack Davis. It's also apparent coming up with a good signature line and placement can be challenging,
Thanks for being a good sport, Frank.
